The
Problem
The
Marcellus Shale industry in Pennsylvania
and across the Northeast is a thriving
business. According to the Pennsylvania
DEP as of 2011 there are 1,920 Marcellus
Shale wells and 3,337 drilling permits
in the state. Many of these Marcellus Shale
sites are in remote areas and are
totally unprotected from vandalism and
theft. Not only does the present
potential loss in damaged equipment or
stolen materials but it also opens up
communities to very real environmental
threats. This problem is so severe that
many municipalities are writing
ordinances requires Marcellus Shale
drilling companies to provide some site
security. Since many Marcellus Shale
drilling sites are in remote locations
without power Internet there are few
options for protection.
