CUSTOM WEBCAM CAPTURES LILY THE BEAR GIVING BIRTH
Murrysville, PA, January 22, 2010 –
PixController, Inc., a Murrysville company that specializes in
motion-activated, digital, video, cellular and DVR camera systems,
announced today that three-year-old Lily the bear gave birth in front of
an audience of over 20,000 viewers. She gave birth to what appears to be
one cub at approximately 12:38 est. This is the first time in history
that a webcam has been placed inside the den of a wild, female, black
bear in hopes of capturing a live birth.
PixController was contacted in late October of this year by Doug
Hajicek, President and Producer, Whitewolf Entertainment with the
details of this project that he was working on in conjunction with the
North American Bear Centre in Ely, MN. At that time, Hajicek asked if
PixController would be interested in sharing their webcam expertise and
consider becoming part of this team. Bill Powers, President/CEO,
PixController, Inc. was more than up for the challenge. He spent five
weeks putting together a custom camera that would stream live video from
this remote bear den located in Ely.
PixController has had its own existing webcam of western Pennsylvania
woods streaming through WildEarth.tv for about a year with great
success. Since Powers was very comfortable with their already
established relationship, he asked WildEarth to be a part of the project
with him.
The bear
den camera went live on January 10, 2008. And thanks to everyone’s
efforts, news of “Lily the Black Bear” spread quickly. Lily now has her
own facebook page with over 51,000 fans – and growing daily.
“This is
the most amazing thing I have ever been involved with,” says Powers.
“When I first heard about the project, I knew it would be ground
breaking, but I never could have predicted this. There are literally
people all over the world who have been following Lily for weeks now –
people who have fallen in love with this bear – and they are all
experiencing together. It’s incredible.”
The next
step is to add an additional camera outside of the den. This will be
another system custom designed by PixController. This second camera will
be full color and will allow us all to follow Lily and her cub as it
grows and starts to explore the world.
